Did you see the High Point Enterprise article, “Going Down,” on January 15?  The great news is that crime rates in High Point continued the downward slide again in 2010.  Unofficial statistics from the High Point Police Department show a decline in both violent crimes and property crimes. 

The Department gives credit to a winning combination – the on-going work of the Violent Crimes Task Force, additional special policing efforts, such as Focused Deterrence, intervention strategies targeting youth offenders and the work of groups including High Point Community Against Violence.

Once again, proof that the work we have been doing in High Point is having the results we want, making High Point a safer place for everyone!  Thanks to Pat Kimbrough for putting it in print.

On December 10, HPCAV Board President Gretta Bush was made an honorary colonel for her service to the city and police department.  Gretta has been devoted to reducing violent crime in High Point for years and has been active in working with both adults and juveniles.  Congratulations, Gretta!

Gretta Bush, chairwoman of the HP CAV Board, received a 2009 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award last evening during the Volunteer Center of Greensboro 2010 Recognition Celebration program.  Gretta was one of four volunteers awarded this honor.  [Read more…]

On July 21, HP CAV supporters, along with city officials and community members, gathered to recognize Mr. Zaki Khalifa and to celebrate the ribbon cutting and official dedication of the new office location at 792 North Main Street.  Mr. Khalifa donated this building to HP CAV and an anonymous donor made it possible for us to renovate the space, making it more suitable for our needs.  Gretta Bush, HP CAV Board Chairperson and Jim Summey, Executive Director, presided during the ceremony.

The new HP CAV building houses our Executive Director as well as the America Works office, currently led by Jackie Iverson.  There is space for HP CAV’s administrative assistant, once hired, as well as the America Works intern.  In addition, there is a classroom are and space for HP CAV meetings.

For the second year, First Wesleyan Church has designated HP CAV one of the beneficiaries of monies raised through its concert series.  These events are perfect for everyone in the family and the performers bring high quality music and comedy to High Point. 

The second in the series is coming up June 25.  Mark Lowery, a comedian, will be performing.  Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the show begins at 7:00 p.m.  There are 3 different ticket prices available.  The last two concerts in the series are set for August 27 and November 30.  All concert details are available on First Wesleyan’s website (look for the Performing Arts Series logo) or you may call the church office at 884-1111.

HP CAV and the City of High Point have partnered to welcome America Works to our crime reduction efforts. As announced a press conference on March 23 at High Point University, America Works eX Program will fill a critically important part of the overall strategy we have been using. Helping individuals find and stay employed in a meaningful and life changing way has been a struggle for our organization. America Works staff will provide a much broader base of employment related support, geared specifically for individuals with criminal backgrounds.

On February 24, Dr. Patrick Harmon called our Executive Director to share the good news of a financial gift that will enable HPCAV to improve its services.
